Rock ‘n Roll

(Edited to add that I'm linking up here:   http://asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com)
When we built our turkey buildings, there were all kinds of huge, gorgeous rocks that appeared during the dirt work.  And we asked the construction company to leave them for us.  And they loaded them up and took them away.  Stinkers.
But we still had this one. :)img_1057
So late Sunday afternoon, my husband loaded it up using the love of his life Bobcat S250 and brought it across the field to our driveway.

He took out the “triangle garden.” img_0825
And moved the rock into place.

We’re going to put our last name, with Est. 2006 on the rock.  I’m going to use black Patio Paint and paint it on.
(By the way, see my house’s black eye?  You can actually see it from the highway, .4 mile away.  Classy, huh?  Unfortunately, siding is a 2 man job and 1 man (hubby) is very busy.  Someday…)

In the mean time, Adam Bomb and I worked on this mess.  This is what’s leftover from ONE of the THREE large areas of our yard that we had to dig up last fall.  This is one is from a water line.  See the blue flags in the picture above?  That’s where the water meter will go, conveniently in the lee of the rock. :)

So I raked and Adam picked up rocks.  He was a pretty good little helper.

After the rocks were picked up well enough to get the hubby’s approval.  We spread some grass seed.  I used a big cup to spread it around, and Adam helped with that, too.  He was actually pretty good at shaking it out of the cup and spreading it!  The whole time, he said, “I poe, I poe,” and we thought it meant, “I pour.”  But he hasn’t stopped saying it, and says it anytime he wants to do something by himself.  Weirdo.

And in the end, we had this:

Not great, but it is an improvement!

And our lilac is budding.  I can’t wait for it to bloom!

Join us Saturdays at tatertotsandjello.com for the weekend wrap up party!

  1. Oooh I am so jealous of your big rock, and your idea to put your name and date on it, I want one too! Also jealous of your lilacs, we used to have 5 huge bushes at my parents house, and I have been wanting to plant one here at my house. I think if we don't end up moving it will be a good thing for me to plant and our "meant-to-be" home as I have been calling it. :)

  2. I LOVE that fantastic rock! And I can't believe the construction company took the others! Lame!
Maybe he was trying to say "I help." So fun when they first start to talk and you're not sure what they mean. Ha!

  3. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! :0) I love the rock. There is so much you can do to landscape around it too, if you choose to do that. Your son is adorable and seems to be a really good helper.

  4. Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I can't believe the hostas survived either, we had 30" of snow--which was a real record breaker. I didn't know what else to do with them so I took a chance and it worked. Your home is so lovely, I would love to have all that space and your rock is fantastic. Happy Outdoor Wednesday.

  7. Hi Katie, I'm actually reading you blog from my computer (not blackberry) which makes commenting MUCH easier! Adam is such a sweet little helper! You'll have to let me know how your grass seed does. We moved our garden this year, so we seeded grass over the old garden area. So far no germination....grr (I keep telling Lucas we need to water it more often)! Maybe tonight's rain will help.

  8. Hi Katie,
Thanks so much for visting me, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Come back for a ride anytime! I would have been so bummed if they didn't leave my rocks! Those big rocks are quite an asset. I'm so glad you got atleast one. So cute to see your son getting in on the action, reminds me of my boys when they were little, they were always right there w/dad in the middle of things too. Enjoyed your blog!

  9. I like where you placed the rock. It makes a nice marker!

For my son's 3rd birthday, I wanted to have a load of boulders delivered instead of presents. I thought he would have so much fun climbing on them, but my husband was concerned about neighbor kids hurting themselves.

  10. I think it would be so cool to have a big rock with our names and year established on it. You have a lovely house and great property!
